Shipping Guide Lines

Shipping boxesShipping computers or hard drives from a law office to our lab is a common occurrence. By applying a little care, there is no reason the shipment cannot be completely successful.

Before shipping any computer component to us for examination, you MUST print out, and fill in by hand our Chain of Custody form from here

  1. Selecting a carrier: FedEx or UPS both offer good, quick service, and will insure a package. UPS seems a little more reliable in sticking to schedules. Never use a carrier that does not have a nation-wide reputation for quality.

  2. Packaging: Static electricity can kill a hard drive, and one of the best generators of static electricity is Styrofoam peanuts. Use bubble-wrap or medium density foam packing inside of all packages containing computer parts.

  3. Shipping a Hard Drive: Do not use Styrofoam peanuts when shipping a hard drive. See point two above. Ship hard drives in an anti-static bag if possible, or in a bubble-wrap bag if you cannot acquire an anti-static bag. Carriers like UPS will sell you any size box, so if you are only shipping a hard drive, the size of the box will not matter; just the weight. Use a box large enough to accommodate lots of packing material. Never ship a hard drive in a simple envelope. There must be ample packaging material to protect it.

  4. Shipping a Laptop: If you haven't read step two about static electricity, read it now. Use two to three inches of packing material that completely surrounds the laptop, so it cannot move in the box. When using clear packing tape to seal the box, you cannot use too much.

  5. Shipping a Desktop PC: See item two above. All the points on shipping a laptop apply, but make the packing material about four to six inches thick. Make sure the box is also extra thick and sturdy.

  6. Labeling: Make sure that any labels are computer generated, so the package does not become lost because the carrier could not read someone's handwriting.

  7. Finally: Insure any package being shipped to us. Obtain a tracking number from the shipper and let us know what it is.
